S.Wolf Tactic: Quarter Domination

Hope all you had a great and enjoyable holiday season,  I know mine was both relaxing and entertaining. Just prior to leaving for my parents for the week, I got in another 1500 point game with my Wolves & IG (same list as below). This time, I came up against a very strong player (only had 2 losses at Adepticon 40k championships) who brought his Eldar to the table. He ran a mixed foot/mobilzed list, but had in several forge world units (a flyer with lances, a skimmer with a D cannon on it (for 125 points I add, one of a few things I think is under-costed from forgeworld), and another small skimmer with lances (hornet?)). We played a pitched battle/the scouring mission (where fast attack can score) and had 6 objectives with randomized values. I did end up winning the game (my 5th in a row!), however this game is more about the strategy Ive been employing with my loganwing drop list: Quarter Domination.

Ive found that in a standard 40k game, unless castling, a player will deploy with his forces distributed across the table edge (taking advantage of terrain, to approach objectives, etc). While I typically deploy in a similar fashion, I do have several units in reserve in the form of my drop pod units and Vendetta. Now, both players will advance some units across the board to assault or control the middle while holding others back in order to either shot heavy weapons, remain on objectives, or in terrain early in the game. With my heavy hitting units in the drop pods, Ive been able to overwhelm my past few opponents on about a third of the table (typically a flank) with both any advancing units on that side along with the drop pods (which contain over 850 points of my 1500 point army). As a result, I quickly collapse that flank while typically crushing the units which were deployed on that side. I then force my opponent to try and neutralize the threat at its flank while continuing the attack from my board edge on the other flank, all the while my opponent is down a few units lost from my drop assault (see how I leverage the combi-weapons on wolf guard to get that initial shock). Since the drop pods provide instant board control, Ive been able to pick the flank I want to advance on without sending any prior indications to my opponent (unlike when one typically moves on a flank in transports).

While earlier on I hadn't noticed this was a tactic I was consciously leveraging, its become very apparent in my last 3 games, as I have repeated the same maneuver against my opponent. In all 3 games, it ended up that ~65% of the combat and shooting was occurring in a single table quarter as a result of this, and it got me thinking of how I was employing this same strategy over and over again to dominate a quarter of the table early on, forcing my opponent to react. An obvious counter to this is to castle, however with the prevalence of multi-objective games in 6th ed, castling is a much less seen deployment type than in 5th (when only 33% of the games were multi-objective).

Vendetta Completed

It took some time, but I finally wrapped up the Vendetta with some OSL and applied some satin varnish to seal it in (else the wings and such get chipped in transit). I also painted the pilots, though I have no idea how they are supposed to fit into the cockpits as intended.

With this model done, im 100% with my 1500 point Wolf/IG list. Ive got one more unit of wolf guard to wrap up and ill be ready to rock at 1750.

Hobby and gaming has been a little slow with the holidays here, but I imagine it will be picking up in the new year with the DE back in the hopper.

Models for Sale/Trade

Well, back from the holidays! I did get in another game earlier this month with the Loganwing list and it performed spectacularly well. I faced a 1500 point Grey Knight list which comprised of Coteaz and 30 Terminators (psybolt ammo, hammer, and 2 psycannons each squad of 10). On turn one, my plasma heavy wolf guard squad unleashed ten plasma shots to kill a total of ZERO terminators. Apparently when you go to ground in area terrain you add +2 to your cover save! With that said, by turn two I basically had tabled the opponent (of who I have never beat before, he is a solid GT player). We called it soon after, and he was able to get in another game quickly.

Now to business, I have some old models for sale/trade... Let me know if you're interested.

Vendetta WIP

Quick post, as I dont have too many updates for the week. I'm ohhh so very close to finishing up my 1500 point Loganwing/IG army however! Here is one of the last additions, the beloved/despised Vendetta gunship. Im about half done at this point, so youll likely see the inished product later this week.

Almost Completed: Loganwing Wolves

Here they are, the 1500 point Loganwing/IG army Ive been "perfecting" since the release of 6th edition. I unfortunately have only been able to get in a few games lately, though the past few games I have gotten in have been victories! More importantly though, they have been fun for both myself and my opponents. So, behold Donz0s Loganwing:

My list is as follows:

Logan Grimnar
w./ 5x Wolf Guard (3x Terminators w./ 3 P. Fist, 1x Assault Cannon, 3x Combi Meltas)
in Drop Pod

Rune Priest in Terminator Armor (Jaws & M.Hurricane or Divination)
w./ 6x Wolf Guard (2x Terminators w./ 1 P. Fist & 1 Power Sword, 1x Cyclone Missile Launcher, 5x Combi Plasmas)
in Drop Pod

10x Grey Hunters (Wolf Banner, 2x Plasmas)
in Drop Pod

5x Long Fangs (4x Missiles)

10x Imperial Guard Veterans (2x Plasma, Flamer)

Imperial Command Squad (2x Melta)

Vendetta Gunship

In the past few games, Logan has been an absolute beast! He alone took out about 15 marines last game I played. He is expensive, but with his abilities he simply magnifies both his squad and others around him. With him giving his squad preferred enemy, with the meltas and assault cannon, Im normally able to get first blood (taking out any enemy armor). I often break him off from the squad if im able to get two advantageous assaults off. He can hold his own, and so can his squad (especially when he can grant all  space wolves within 18 inches +1 attacks once per game).
The squad with the Rune Priest also drops down first turn, and unleashes 10x plasma and 2x cyclone shots (along with whichever power im able to cast) and the most dangerous squad I see on the table (wraiths, terminators, etc).
The guard squad sits back as long as it can, plinking off units with its plasma guns. Later, the Vendetta comes in (with the Command Squad embarked) along with the grey hunters and do what they do best (take out any armor/troops choices).

So, let me hear what you think? Im certainly aware there are come bad matchups for this army (Dark Eldar can be too fast and throw out tons of wounds, Ork Hordes scare me, and Necrons have been tough every time Ive faced them).

Something Dark comes this way

Its been decided... I wanted to build out a second army (aside from the wolves w./ IG) and while crafting up a CSM was looking to be a solid alternative, I wanted to drop the power armor for the first time (Went from Space Marines to Blood Angels to Space Wolves in the past 5 years). I once began an Ork army, but got stuck on the sheer volume of painting i would need to have done after I painted up my first 10 choppa boyz. So, lone behold, my first xenos army, the Dark Eldar! So, my very own kabal which ill being piecing together.

Rune Priest of Fenris

Much like the High King himself, this Rune Priest in Terminator Armor (im not running him as Njal), will be dropping into the battlefield in his own drop pod, also accompanied by some wolf guard terminators with Combi Plasmas and a Cyclone Missile Launcher. Im still not 100% pleased with the glowing runes on the staff, so im likely to work on those a little more. Otherwise though, im pleased with how he turned out. Contrast with Logan in some of the pics below:

The High King Logan

Long live the High King of Fenris! I finished painting him up last weekend:
The picture above I touched up a little in GIMP for Mac OS X before posting. I simply cut out the background, as compared to the other shots below.

I got him on the tabletop again yesterday. He has performed well in the two games Ive gotten in thus far with my latest loganwing list (which Ill post soon), as he basically single-handedly schooled a squad of purifiers yesterday and a blob squad of guardsmen the prior game (only to be shot down after when failing 2 of 4, 2+ saves, booo)..

How To: Make Combi Storm Bolters

Well, as part of my Loganwing army, I tend to equip my terminators with combi weapons making them initially nasty when they first hit in the drop pod. So, with the only combi storm bolters I was aware of currently made by forgeworld on the heresy style terminator armor, I had a go at it...

So, in order to actually make a combi-melta storm bolter in this case required a storm bolter, melta gun, and standard bolter.

What I did was first cut off the barrels of both the bolter (really more a barrel tip) and melta gun, along with the "barrel" section of the storm bolter. I then applied the barrel of the melta gun, along with the barrel tip of the bolter to where the barrels would have been on the storm bolter. After shaving off some wolf insignia on the side of the storm bolter, I applied the melta gun "tank" as seen in the third pic... Next ill be working on the combi-plasma storm bolter, though that may take a little more creativity.

I also have a number of ebay auctions going in with 1 day left if your intersted:

Space Marine Predator - only primed - 25$
Custom Converted Dante Model - 13$

SW Terminators Update

With my space wolves 2.0 list (basically Loganwing and IG for 6th ed.), I continue to make lightning quick progress as compared to my old paint scheme. Here are some pics of some termies, along with some wolf guard with combi-weapons. At this rate, ill finish the army by next month! I'll post my list soon, though I may have to make a few tweaks after the latest FAQ drops from yesterday, from which I must say bravo Games Workshop, bravo...

Battle Brothers

Space Wolves and IG together at last! The only way to win with either of these lower tier codexs is to combine their power into something formidable... Sorry, I was trying to say that with a straight face (IG is likely the top 6th ed codex, SWs are maybe 3rd or 4th in my opinion).

I think this display board just isnt going to do it anymore... Drop pods have just such a huge footprint.

Reinforcements Have Arrived

After getting in another game of 6th ed in with the wolves, I decided to work on correctly a problem Im encountering (this particular problem is prevalent in most SM armies). I simply lacked the torrent of fire as compared to both of the Necron armies Ive been up against. My current list is becoming fairly effected (drop pod loganwing with termies w./ combi weaponed plasma, heavy wolf guard/rune priest/long fangs, no armor outside pods), however I was lacking the overwhelming torrent of fire I think I need to make this list tournament ready. With Necrons, Grye Knights, Nids, and the soon to be released CSM likely being top tournament armies I needed more than what I can currently deliver. The Drop Pod termies are particularly tough in combat, can score, and include a lot of high AP shooting, however do struggle against hordes or high volumes of anti infantry fire.

So, in come the guard allies! Im likely going to include 2 squads of veterans armed with 3x plasma in Chimeras, a primera pysker, and a vendetta to round out my 1850 drop loganwing army (the guard will consume about 500 points in total). The Chimera with the primera psyker and vet squad will be able to pump out 2D6 S6 AP5, 4 S6 AP6, 6 S7 AP2, 3 S5 AP4, 2 S7 AP4, 8 S3 AP6 shots each round of shooting. That is simply an unreal amount of fire power which is perfect for tacking out hordes or monstrous creature. All that for the low low price of 180 points (plus 70 for the psyker who adds the 2D6 S6 AP5 shots). Best part, they are scoring too, which will act as a great mid field gunboat to claim objectives.

Im still painting away on the wolves too, here making some progress on a terminator up against a finished grey hunter (wolf guard will have yellow shoulder pads).

Space Wolves have dropped!

Ive been very, very busy as you can see. I was able to finish up another few grey hunters and a second drop pod this weekend. Your going to see a lot of wolves posted over the next few weeks.

Greatest Blood Bowl pitch ever?

Wow, this is spectacular. As someone who has never played Blood Bowl, I have to say, the site of this pitch alone invokes some serious awesomeness and desire to play... Look at this:

See many, many, many more pics and details here. Its simply amazing how many counters, score keeping, scenic mechanisms are on this board.
