A side of Daemon Prince

While I wrapped up this DP a few weeks back, I never did get around to posting him on the blog. I ended up going with a more generic color scheme rather than try to paint him specific to any of the chaos marks. I tried to paint him up with a brown scheme as opposed to the red scheme to begin with, but it did not turn out well at all... I dont know what exactly went wrong, but it really looked bad. Into the dunk tank it went and onto a red scheme. I primarily used vallejo model air paints with ferrari red, orange, and yellow to create a transition from low to highlights. Enjoy, and happy new years!

Busy with Daemons

Sorry for the lapse in post as of late, but its certainly not from a lack of hobbying! I usually tone done the updates around the holidays as other priorities certain take focus this time of year. With that said, here is a Lord of Change I'll be using as Fateweaver which I painted up this weekend. He (She) is going to take a lot more work, but its off to a good start.

My Despoiler - Kitbashed Abaddon

I decided to try to run a deathstar in my CSM/Daemons army which is composed of Abaddon and Typhus in either a squad of 30 zombies or with 3 obilts (depends on the matchup). As I didn't like the idea of shelling out 25$ for what is currently an awful mold, I turned to the bit box. With some limited lord bits (only front torso, one shoulder pad, left claw, axe, and spike racks), a csm head, a ork nob should pad, and a black reach terminator I went at it and craft this baddddd dude. I really like how he looks. I decided to also for the first time try a non-metallic metallic paint job on the axe blade.

Heres Johnny! (Great Unclean One)

Just got to finishing up this GUO today. He didnt take as long as I expected, though I did leverage the airbrush to do most everything outside some of the detailing and armor. Im happy with how he turned out, though mid way thru I really felt something was missing (he had a dark purple tongue at the time). I went in added a little more detailing and went with the pink tongue to bring about some contrast to the model. This guy is going to be hitting a table top near you!

Playing Cards for Grater Daemons - tracking powers, stats, etc

All, by using the Magic Set Creator program, you too can create a nifty little playing card which you can use to quickly track everything going on with your complex characters. Simply laminate, get a dry erase marker, and your good to go! Here is one I just made for my GUO.

Tzeentch Screamers and Nurgle Oblits!

Its been a very busy past month... Gotten in another game with the CSM, but this time its hand in hand with Daemons (in particular, the Great Unclean One and some Screamers (3++ with re-rolling 1's, so a light screamerstar :-) ). As far a the oblits go, 5 down, 1 to go. Those little bastards are tough to paint. The flesh is rather time consuming, but i like how they are turning out.

Tau Riptide - Commission

I was asked on Friday to paint up a Tau Riptide for someone who needed it asap for the NOVA Open, so I needed to do it quickly! Well, I spent a lot of time this weekend heads down on painting up this riptide. He asked specifically for this scheme as its follows his farsight army painted tau.

Slow but Purposeful

Finished up the first few Oblits, Nurgle marked of course! Got in another game against Eldar with my CSM IG (this time it was Wave Serpent Spam (5 and some Warp Spiders)) and took the game again! With that said, I didn't get alpha struck too bad, so that likely kept me in the game early on. Got a game set up this weekend in preparation for Rock Con 2013!

Typhus - The Destroyer Host and Belial

Finished painting up Typhus last night, and he clocked in at around 7 hours total time on task... He might be one of my favorite models in 40k, and Im glad he turned out as he did, im rather pleased. I dont think Ive ever spent this much time on a single model.

I also took on a small commission, which I had to operate within a certain budget. I was asked to paint the hero's of the dark angels, so we begin with Belial...  I wasnt sure how it was going about halfway thru the model, but Ive learned time and time again to reserve judgement till the model is completed, as I really also like how he turned out...

My Greater Plague Father!

This is why I love 6th edition... Since I acquired an awesome looking Plague Father from Ultraforge (aka a Great Unclean One), I'm one squad of plague bearers and a daemon prince away from having another allied attachment for my Nurgle CSM or Nurgle Guard. With allied attachments available, I can play another army for about $150 and its fantastic.

He Says Hello....

The Plaguefather givith Victory!

After finalizing my CSM/IG list, I got in a game with it against the spawnchildren of the old ones, the Eldar. With the new Eldar codex just dropping, I wasnt to sure what to expect. Fortunately, my list is a fairly good all comers list at 1850 points (see list below). I faced a mobile army (wave serpents, jetbikes with farseer and warlocks, warp spiders, hemlock fighter, nitespinner (?)) with some heavy hitters (several squads of wraithguard that were scoring) and some rangers and weapon platforms. Well, I can say that Typhus is an absolute beast, the oblits are awesome, and the heldrake really is a beast to eldar. The game ended game 5 and was rather close, but the CSM/IG pulled off the win. Some highlights were:
- Helldrake took out 2 Hull Points off Wave Serpent then flamed away 4 of 5 Wraithguard
- 5 Wraithguard shot at the oblits, and only killed one! Then the remaining oblit killed 2 with plasma shots and took down the last 3 in combat!
- The hemlock fighter wouldnt die, and forced a Plague Marine Squad AND my platoon squad to run off the board with terrify! That thing simply wasnt going down as its vector dancing on my board edge.
- Typhus wiped out the farseer jetbike squad almost on his own (farseer and 5 or 6 warlocks?)
- Havoks are ok, but oblits are likely the better choice (they also ran off the board)
- 5 Warpspiders shredded Typhus in 1 turn of shoot, such a nasty unit

Plague Marines:

HQ:
Typhus
Chaos Sorcerer (Master L. 3, Terminator Armor)
C. Command (Lascannon)

Troops:
7x Plague Marines (2x Plasma)
7x Plague Marines (2x Plasma)
5x Platoon Command (2x Flamer)
20x IG Platoon (2x Autocannon, Plasma)
18x Zombies

Heavy:
Leman Russ Battle (H. Bolters)
2x Obliterators
5x Havoks (2x Lascannon, 2x Autocannons)

Fast Attack:
Vendetta
Heldrake

WIP Havoks - conversion

Given they dont sell an updated havok box set, Im left to make my own autocannons. Im happy with how they turned out, however I do think they lack a little flare and the barrels may need to be shortened slightly. I could of course get the forgeworld autocannons that were recently released or get IG heavy weapon autocannons, but I really want to craft my own. I probably wont spend much more time on them however till I get a few games of play testing done.

I did wrap up the Nurgle squad I posted last week, and have my army fully built aside from the heldrake and Typhus (both in the mail)!

Return to Nurgle!

I lied, I didnt jump back on the wolves last week, but continued to work on the Nurgle Guard and Nurgle Marines. I decided that rather than having the Renegade IG as the primary, I switched it up. I just need my power armor! Ive got a lot of new CSM toys in the mail, sooo much to paint!

So, what did I miss?

Well Folks, as its clear from the lack of hobby updates, I took a bit of a modeling/40k break. Last time I picked up a 40k model or read a 40k blog, the Chaos Daemon codex was just about to be released... So, anyone care to recap what I missed? It looks like the Chaos Daemons and Tau codexs dropped, and I just saw pics of new eldar models on the way in June too? After 5 years in the hobby, Ive never seen things move so quickly... I have a lot of catching up to do, as at one time I was keeping myself up to par on each codex release. I may be putting down the renegade guard for a little while and getting back to my Wolves and IG allies. Looks like, at least from the FAQs, I can still run my IG blobs with rune priest attached without issue.

My Lumbering Behemoth

Finished up my Leman Russ Battletank as part of my 1850 Renegade IG list, and have a quick write up of a local tournament game I was in.

As for the game, it was at 1850 points and I ran my Loganwing drop list (1500 point list) with a guard blob (30 man w./ 3 plasmas & 3 power axes), vendetta, and heavy weapons squad (autocannons) led by a Primaris Psyker. I ran up against another Loganwing player with Thunderwolves to back it up, so a lot of hard hitting 2+/3++ on opponents side of the table. Some highlights of the game were:
-I eliminated his thunderwolf lord/thunderwolf companions on the drop with my plamsa/melta wolf guard in drop pods turn one, so off to a good start
-My blob squad ate one of his terminator/rune priest squad in shooting (1st rank fire/2nd rank fire is nasty with such a blob with some plasma peppered in) by the 2nd round
-He ran Arjak Rockfist, who punked Logan in 1 round of combat (dude is a beast)
-I ran a Rune Priest and the Primaris Psyker in with the guard blob in hopes of getting a 4+ invul save and feel no pain, only got feel no pain, though it was enough to allow the squad to absolutely own the center of the table.

The Endless Horde

Typhus will be pleased! While these are not going to be plague zombies, they are counts as guardsman in my larger blob squads. They are mantic games ghouls (as opposed to their version of the zombie) models, and I really think that while they have limited models, posing them uniquely gives them a uniform horde look. I painted them using the same technique for the green as I did on my guardsman, however the flesh was a different combination. To achieve what I think looks like a good undead flesh skintone, do the following:

Base with Karak Stone (old Dheneb stone), applying two coats onto the black primed base. Follow up with a nice wash of agrax brown wash, to which then you paint the raised areas (muscles, erc) again with Karak. Finally, on the most raised areas do a 50:50 blend of Karak and Bleached Bone to top it off!

New Deamons update (not german translation)

For anyone interested, Imperator Guides has a very solid walkthru of the supposed daemons codex release. This is not the one listed on most sites yesterday (german translation), its much more comprehensive. Also, note the new rules to flamers (no longer way OP'ed, simply a solid unit), though screamers appear to be the same without ET. Other units appear to be looking interesting with this new rules set!

Hellhound Custom Made

As you can tell, this isnt your out of the box hell hound. I had a spare chimera chassis, and wanted a hellhound, so voila! I made one, and I love the way it turned out. Its to join the ranks of my renegade guard. Time to fry some who follow the false emperor. To nurgle!

The model consist of a Chimera, a Baal predator flamer, some plastic card, and barrels from Tamiyas WW2 battlefield kit.
